The Preservation of Fire: Busui Ajaw at Bangkok Kunsthalle

The Preservation of Fire, by Busui Ajaw, remains on view at Bangkok Kunsthalle until 1 November 2026. Developed with the Akha community, the exhibition approaches cultural continuity as something practised rather than merely displayed.

Installation connects craft, ritual, dwelling and the memories carried by material forms.

Culture sustained through practice

The presentation spans two floors, bringing textiles into a relationship with a reconstructed Akha house. Its structure connects the immediate physical encounter with questions of memory and the relationship between living communities and those who came before.

Allow time to consider how the different levels relate to one another. A house is not only a shape to recognise, and a textile is not only a surface: both can direct attention to the knowledge and work required to keep a practice alive. Read the contextual material alongside the installation to avoid treating cultural references as decoration alone.
