To Hold, To Be Held: Jeon Gi-ok at Atelier 9 Bangkok

Discarded cardboard becomes a starting point for thinking about support and belonging in To Hold, To Be Held. Jeon Gi-ok's solo exhibition runs at Atelier 9 Bangkok from 24 October to 20 December 2026.

Paintings, sculptural installations and spatial works bring attention to materials normally valued only for what they carry or protect.

A second life for a familiar material

The organiser describes cardboard transformed into landscapes, structures and thousands of folded boats. Its earlier purpose remains relevant: packaging supports another object, while a boat depends on the water beneath it. The exhibition connects those practical relationships with the less visible ways people depend on one another.

When visiting, move between the overall arrangement and the individual folds. Repetition can be read as a collective form, but every crease also records an action. Consider how your impression changes when you stop seeing cardboard as waste and begin seeing the labour invested in it.

The title offers a useful question to take through the space: what appears to provide support, and what does that supporting thing depend on in turn?
