Bright at Midnight: Bas Jan Ader at Bangkok Kunsthalle

Bright at Midnight brings work by Bas Jan Ader to Bangkok Kunsthalle from 14 October 2026 to 10 January 2027. The presentation is organised with Meliksetian | Briggs and The Estate of Bas Jan Ader, Los Angeles.

The exhibition places a small group of works from 1970–1975 within the building's unfinished architecture, allowing vulnerability, light and physical balance to become part of the encounter.

An encounter with uncertainty

The organiser lists Thoughts unsaid, Then forgotten; Light vulnerable objects threatened by eight cement bricks; and Launch of the Ocean Wave. Two installations are reinterpreted in relation to the site, alongside archival film connected with preparations for In Search of the Miraculous.

Ader disappeared at sea in 1975 during that project's Atlantic crossing. Knowing this history can profoundly affect the experience, but it need not replace attention to what each work actually does. Consider the tension between an ordinary material and the possibility of change or collapse.

Rather than treating the space as a neutral background, look at how its surfaces and proportions influence your sense of the works. This is a visit worth approaching slowly.
