Ghost from the Past: Naphadanai Chiravatchanon at Number 1 Gallery

Ghost from the Past brings Naphadanai Chiravatchanon's paintings to Number 1 Gallery from 17 October to 8 November 2026. Despite its title, this is not a supernatural exhibition: its subject is the persistence of memory in present-day feeling.

The artist uses scenes with a cinematic character to approach guilt, unresolved emotion and experiences that remain difficult to put aside.

Paintings that behave like scenes

The gallery identifies a woman tying a white ribbon as a recurring image. Relationships between figures become a starting point for interpretation rather than a closed story, leaving space for viewers to connect the works with family, friendship, love or loss.

Try reading the paintings in two ways. First, look at each as an independent image, noticing framing and the distribution of attention. Then consider how neighbouring works might alter the story you thought you understood. An apparent sequence does not necessarily produce a single narrative.

This approach can make the exhibition particularly rewarding for visitors interested in the relationship between painting and cinema, and in how visual storytelling allows something unresolved to remain visible.
